My parents were both artists, and as a kid I took lots of art classes and drew constantly. But I ended up a history major in college, a wife and mother, a budget counselor, and a banker. I also wrote non-fiction articles, mostly on finance, budget, and banking.

When I retired, I began writing in earnest—historical fiction set during WWII in Japan, where I once lived and worked in a pottery factory, and the Vietnam war era, including the Quebec Separatist Movement which happened at the same time—the sixties and early seventies, with almost as much violence. The movement caused a maelstrom across Canada, and Montreal was the epicenter.

Finding an agent and then a publisher was a challenge. Although I’ve since left the publisher, I had a wonderful time with them, attending Book Expo America (BEA) in New York City and Frankfurt Book Fair in Frankfurt Germany, where I met potential readers and signed copies of my books. A wonderful experience, as was the Tucson Festival of Books and meeting with book clubs throughout the northwest. Now my books are being republished by T.K. Books, Publisher (publishing?) and I’m looking forward to starting a new phase of my writing career.

I also picked up my mother’s paintbrush where she left off—she had been an ardent tole-painter for years, then at 80 went to Mexico for a month and came back painting furniture in wild and free colors. I painted birdhouses, boxes, and furniture in the same spirit. Then I decided to try my hand at more traditional art and took lessons for several years from Kevin McCain, a traditionally trained artist. I still love strong, saturated colors and use them on my painted wood and in my landscape and still-life paintings.
To me, writing is painting a story with words and painting is telling a story with color. Each time I begin a novel or short story, put a canvas on my easel, or start a box, birdhouse, or piece of furniture, I wonder what the story will be, how it will end.
